HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

What do we do at Convo Club?

We exchange ideas with each other through conversation (not monologues).

Ask people what they think!

🗣️ "Why?"

🗣️ "Can you give an example?"

🗣️ "How about you?"

Build off of what others have said!

Why E4S Conversation Club?

Everyone needs a safe place to practice speaking and listening with speakers from around the world.

Talking about sustainability-related topics can expand our consciousness and inspire actions that will help us to do our part in the fight against climate change.

The Format of Conversations

You will have 2 or 3 conversations during this hour with different groups in breakout rooms.

Each conversation will be 10-20 minutes.

The host will give you a minute to wrap up before returning to the main room.

Guidelines for Successful Conversation

  • Be polite and professional

  • Speak as much as you listen

  • Try to understand: ask for clarification, spelling, and more

  • Make note of new words and interesting ideas

  • Use the chat for questions and help

How Much it Costs

E4S Conversation Club is free! There is no cost at all to join the event.

The Meetup app and website is also free to join.

Please arrive on time and make sure that your audio quality is good so that everyone can hear you.

September 25th's Topic & Questions

🌊 Who owns the ocean? 🌊

The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet, but did you know that two-thirds of it lies outside any country’s borders? These areas are called the high seas—and they belong to everyone, and no one.

From tiny plankton to massive blue whales, the high seas are teeming with life. But they are also threatened by overfishing, pollution, and new industries like deep-sea mining.

✨ In September, the High Seas Treaty was ratified by 60 global members and will soon become international law. (Read about it here.)

Its goal?

To create vast conservation areas in international waters and safeguard biodiversity for future generations.

At this month’s Conversation Club, we’ll explore this topic through small-group discussions. You don’t need to be a scientist to join! Just bring your curiosity, your voice, and your English practice.

Let's talk about it!

  1. Have you ever visited the ocean? What do you remember about it?

  2. Do people in your country eat a lot of fish or seafood? Which kinds?

  3. What changes in the ocean have you noticed in your lifetime (e.g., seafood prices, plastic waste, fishing practices, tourism)

  4. What role does the ocean play in your country’s culture, economy, or traditions?

  5. The high seas belong to no single country. Who should decide what happens there?

  6. The BBNJ Agreement says companies must assess their environmental impact before mining or fishing in the high seas. Do you think this will work? Why or why not?

  7. Imagine it’s the year 2050. What would you like the ocean to look like, and why?
